and why do blacks support democrats when they were the ones who fought emancipation, and fought civil rights laws? Byrd is the king of pork barrell spending and WV voters seem to like that.
The democratic party is the party of doing anything to gain poltical power, they're not the party of tolerance at all. Just observe how vicious they are with anyone who disagrees with them. Ya, they tolerate you, as long as you agree with them.

He was a member of the KKK. The reason that he got elected was because he improved the roads in West Virginia and brought a lot of federal money to the state. That and West Virginia is a democratic state.

He's not CURRENTLY a member of the KKK. He was a member in the 1940s, when he was in his early 20s. He is now over 80 years old and has served his constituents for many terms. The people keep re-electing him so obviously they think he is doing a good job. Everyone makes mistakes in their pasts.

That's equivalent to saying we have a drunk in the White House. When Byrd was young and foolish he joined the KKK. When W was young and foolish he drank. Bush no longer drinks and Byrd is no longer a member of the KKK.

I think I've read where Senator Byrd was involved with the KKK many, many years ago when he was a young man, but he quickly changed his mind about it once he really became aware of what they stood for and represented. We all do stupid things in our youth that we later realize is wrong and regretful, don't we??

He was voted in. Ask the voters... it's a democracy and if they want someone from the KKK well then they can vote that way.

This question was stupid. How such a thought process can be present in a human being is beyond my understanding.

You mean the guy who voted 100% in line with the NAACP? I don't think he is much of a threat to African-Americans.
