Roberta- no need for name-calling I didn't call anyone ignorant. Do you know that ignorant means uninformed?

They have learned that money is hard earned & want the most for their money. They do not waste on things of no importance. That is how you save money for things that are really important.

Many of the people alive during the depression are now dead. Many oldsters live on social security. They have no choice but to be thrifty. Even if you have a decent nest-egg, the cost of insurance, prescriptions and other medical costs starts eating-up the bank account from the get-go. People who are senile usually can't even find the grocery store. To answer your question, I have to say none of the above.

Judging from what my grandparents have told me (they're both in their early 80s and thrifty, although not "cheap". They've been using the same coffee percolator for the last 40 years. It works fine, so why buy a new one?), they're this way because they lived through the depression and had to make do with what they had. They learned not to waste.

5- Social Security doesn't help out as much as they need it to.
they are among the helpless and the homeless and poor, and can't afford medical coverage when its obvios they're bodies aren't the vital machine they once were.

Imagine having 5 prescriptions a month over 100 buck per RX

and No job and no way to get more money.

I think they are a lot smarter than the younger generations who squander everything they earn and then some. It is probably a combination of 1 and 2, plus they are a lot smarter than those under 50 today. 3 and 4 show your ignorance, not theirs.

i think they are thrifty cause they have learned from their 'earlier' financiall mistakes and don't want to run out of money and have to get a job at the age of 70! they aren't senile, they know that the don't NEED anything anymore, and their wants are to live in their house and live peacefully till their dieing days!

maybe the same reasons that non-elderly people are thrifty.
maybe they don't have a lot of money to piss away on text messages and pre-ripped bluejeans.

The first three. They value what a dollar can buy, and realize how much less it buys nowadays.
