Do you mean UK banknotes? If so, they are made from paper manufactured by Portals, who have been making paper for the Bank of England for decades. The paper is a type of rag and cotton mixture which is very hard wearing. The watermark is made by pressing a wire shape (like the Queen's head) into the paper when it's still wet. The pressure squeezes the water out of the paper into the shape, which then dries out and becomes the water mark.

If you go to the Bank of England's website, you'll be able to read more about notes and see pictures of the new £20 note, which comes out in the spring of 2007 - www.bankofengland.co.uk

UK notes are printed by Debden Security Printers, Loughton, Essex. Around 6 million notes are printed each working day.

Paper mainly with various inks, not just one and I don't mean ink colour. A lot of banknotes also contain a metal strip - hold a note up to a bright light and if you see a very narrow, vertical dark line, then that is the metal part. American notes may not have this, I can't remember. There are obviously other chemicals involved in producing the watermark in the paper. Finally if they are a rather pink or red colour / stain, hand them in to your local police stain as they might have been dye marked in a robbery.
