You can find rentals on craigslist.com or Realtor.com. The difference is that listings on craigslist are private owners doing all the work themselves to rent their home or condo. Sometimes it works out o.k. but other times not. The problem is that few people lack the knowledge or experience to handle this appropriately. Realtor.com shows rentals that are listed through a real estate agent. These are generally handled more thoroughly.
Driving around doesn't help at all anymore because of the time it takes to drive the neighborhoods you like.

Call up the towns on the internet (via Yahoo)...most all sites have a property sale/rental spot in their website...
