Ouch. Hard to eliminate the emotions on a question like this. There is always a Price issue which determines where to look. You can find Photo printers that run a THOUSAND dollars or more..., and you can find printers less than $50!

Alas, you probably are looking to print home photos in photo-labs quality at a decent speed. That would put you in the price range of $100-250 or so. In that category, you can look at the HP K550 or the Epson R380. There are others. I prefer the Epson's.

Two notes: Consumables are expensive! Look for a printer that won't cost you an arm and leg for ink. More cartridges seem to be lower operating costs because you can JUST CHANGE any color that runs low, not the whole multi-color carts. Also, look for Microsoft VISTA compatibility. This will frustrate you in 3 months if your 'brand new' printer isn't supported under Microsoft's new WIndows coming January 30, 2007.

You just eliminated the best printer out there with your cost limit. HP and Canon seem to make very decent photo printers. If you are concerned with cost, look at the Print Cost Calculator Too from HP:

If you are a student you can also get a student discount from some resellers. You just need a student ID. Another piece of advice. Get a printer that utilizes seperate ink tanks. The Canon PIXMA series offers this. The HP printers only offer this on their Officejet K550 and 850 line and in their Business Inkjet line.

HP gives the lowest cost per photo at 24 cents per print. Canon and Epson printers will give you between 50 and 60 cents cost per print, with exception of their portable 4x6 photo printers which are 29 cents per print.

I recommend the HP D7160. It costs around $150. If you want to do regular printing, copying, and scanning as well as photos you might look into the HP Photosmart C5180. I own this printer and it produces beautiful prints.
