My car has been stalling and dying when I stop, like at a stop sign. Also, when accelerating from a stop, it will kind of sputter and jerk for a second. Once I get on the road, it's fine. It just occasionlly dies when stopped or when trying to take off from a stop.

What could it be?

I was thinking maybe fuel filter? If it's not the fuel filter, what else could it be?

First make sure it tuned up; INJECTOR cleaner if there moisture in the fuel it help remove. Plugs, wires Rotor and cap, Air Filter, Fuel Filter, whatever it require for a basic tune up. If, this not solve the problem, check the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) it tell the computer how much fuel to supply to the injectors according to you foot on the accelerator. If, your check engine light coming on you may need a code reader to know where the sensor is that causing the problem. An Oxygen Sensor (O2) may be a problem, the computer usually tell this when a TPS it not understand, but, TPS is easy to check. Auto-Zone can help and maybe other parts stores. Really the fuel filter not the problem, gas is fairly clean today, and a fuel filter it probably mess up when going, not idling.

First thing check your air filter sometimes a problem seems big but it's a simple fix. If it is not that your car isn't getting enough fuel it may be a fuel filter, some times there are 2-3, then go to the fuel pump.

It's more than likely your idle air control motor(IAC valve). Easy way to tell. Open the hood of your car, look at throttle body and you'll see where the throttle cables attach, look on the opposite side of the throttle cables and you should see a silver cylinder with wires coming out of it. Take a small hammer and lightly tap on it. If stumbling and stalling goes away, replace it. You may be able to remove it and clean it, but more times than not, it will start doing it again. hope this helps!

you have a dirty IAC valve. (idle air control)

the IAC delivers air to your engine at idle. it's very small and can get clogged. then your engine will have difficulty getting oxygen at idle, forcing you to open the throttle a little with the gas pedal to deliver enough oxygen to keep the engine running...

-unplug the IAC
-remove it from the throttle body
-clean the inside between the two holes with a can of throttle body cleaner.
-if it's gotten this bad you'll probably need a fresh gasket too to put it back.

shouldn't cost you more than 5-10 bucks for the cleaner and a gasket.

If you can put your foot on the gas and keep it running while stopped then it is the fuel filter.
