How about a gift certificate for a restaurant that would be age-appropriate for the daughter (you didn't mention how old the daughter is...) *and* the mom? I'm assuming the mom is a working mom, and eating out is always a nice treat! Someplace like Applebee's, Olive Garden or TGI Fridays, etc. would be good!

By giving a "joint" gift, it's not as likely to be misinterpreted.

Movie gift certificates or dinner gift certificates are good because it is something they can both share. Remember, it's the thought that counts more than the cost of the gift.
