peter jackson is a legend for his work here. His only mistake is that he stayed very religious to the story by having all the extended crap at the end. The movie was 30-40 min longer than it should have been.

He is a great director because it is not easy to make a good movie with such crappy stories and characters. It is not as if he was working with prince valiant or romance of the three kingdoms or robert e howard's conan or solomon kane. He truly made gold from s hit.

He should have killed the midgets off in the end have them die for thier sacrifice, that would have at least been better off. His only real failing.

True, true, the movies are amazing, Peter Jackson is a legend, and everyone else involved in the making of the LotR movies.

I own all extended editions. Awesome stuff. : )

I couldn't believe that people were lining up to get the regular editions when the platinum editions would be coming out just a few months later with all the extended footage, commentaries, features, etc. Definitely raised the bar as to what you could do with dvd extras and supplemental material.

Got the platinum's as each of them came out, then sent away my coupon to get the collector's box to put all the platinums in (the one that the platinum trilogy set came in after ROTK came out).

Yes... I bought all of the extended versions the day they were released on DVD. I love the extra scenes, as well as all of the behind-the-scenes stuff. So much went into those movies, so much dedication by artists, writers, even people like light-and sound workers. I also love PJ's dedication to the works of J.R.R Tolkien, and how important it was for him to stick to the story as much as possible. He's really honored Tolkien with these awesome movies. My favorite books are now my favorite movies... isn't that just awesome?

LOTR never gets old! =)
