To run a car on red diesel (or any diesel fuel), it needs to have a diesel engine.

Strictly speaking, diesel is a type of engine, not a type of fuel.
A diesel engine uses a very high compression ratio to raise the temperature to ignite the fuel. A petrol engine uses a much lower compression ratio, and a spark is added to ignite the fuel.
You won't get diesel fuel to ignite with a spark.
A diesel engine does not have the ignition system (e.g. distributor) that you refer to.

Therefore to get your FSO to run on red diesel you will need to change the engine. The easiest swap would be the PSA XUD9 engine from a later FSO Polonez Caro/Atou or Truck, but it would be a lot of effort for little gain.

Using red diesel fuel on the public road is illegal.

First you can not run a petrol car on diesel , second to use red diesel is strictly illegal and is only for the use of tax exempt people like farmers of government organisations if you are caught using red there is a very heavy fine for doing so

Using red diesel on the road is an offence. Even if you can get the dye out the authorities can still easily detect it. As the only physical difference is the colour, no adaptations are needed to run it.
Secondly, petrol engine won't go with diesel in it.

It is illegal in Britain to run cars on red diesel as the duty paid on it is much less. The special red colouring is to allow authorities to catch offenders.Even if you empty your tank of red diesel and re-fill it with white they can still detect minute traces of the red colour and you could face a heavy fine. There are more and more spot-checks on diesel cars now so it is just not worth it.
Oops i've just read your question again...you can't run a petrol car on diesel fuel the combustion process is different.

Red diesel is exactly the same as the diesel that you get from the petrol station, except much cheaper.. No modifacations needed . Ihave been running 4 veichles "on red" for about 16 years... ... ...JUST DONT GET CAUGHT.. ..Obviously this only works in a diesel engine...Dont try in petrol engines

You would be better off converting it to LPG or CNG,as a petrol engine cant run on Diesel the compression on a petrol engine is far lower than a Diesel engine. The reply from one person saying that old tractors used to switch from Petrol to Diesel is not feasible, they used to switch from Petrol to TVO when warm, like the old Fordson tractors.

It is possible to run a gas engine on diesel you must first start it on gas then cover radiator to raise water temp then switch to diesel won't run very good and be sure to switch back to gas before shutting off.Old farm tractors operated this way.
