Because after 9/11 it was clear that waiting till after an attack before responding was going to result in significant civilian casulties. Saddam was making himself a threat, had a history of making and using chemical and biological weapons and was attempting to put together a nuclear weapon.
For 12 years the UN had be negociating with Iraq to force them to comply with disarming and inspections, and Saddam refused to comply. To make matters worse our allies (Germany, France, and Russia) were subverting the sanctions on Iraq and helping Iraq to obtain and improve his weapons systems.
It was obvious that the only way to eliminate the Iraqi threat was to remove Saddam from power. He was given a chance to surrender and be removed from power peacefully, and given sanctuary in another country. He refused and the war was the only option left. It would have tied up more troops to try to blockaid Saddam and Iran, and Syria would have made that impossible.

"We the People" didn't go; Bushwhack and his bobblehead Cabinet sent some of us there. You have to realize how ignorant this gang is, despite all its credentials. They actually did expect the irate Iraqis to be dumb sheep who would welcome our troops with flowers and kisses.
The goals of this supposed cakewalk were:
1. To cut down Iraq's overproduction of oil, caused by Saddam's cheating on his sanctioned OPEC quotas. This oversupply drove prices down for Exxon, the real director of OPEC.
2. To transfer Iraqi oil revenue to Halliburton and other well-connected corporations that would re-build Iraq.
3. To provide a cheap-labor supply for Wal-Mart and other sweatshoppers.
4. To install missiles aimed at Russia, since Dubdub's policy, even after 9/11 has always been to re-start the Cold War against Russia and China (Afghanistan is close to both China and the former Soviet republics of Central Asia).

I think it was to actually help at first but in the end we have just gotten our self's into a huge mess. So really there might of been another reason that we all did not know about.

What else, other than to get free oil. US will never intervene if there is no benefit for themselves. Look, there is war in many places (i..e Africa), do we see US intervening, no!!!
No dough, no love.
