I read a book in the sixth grade in 1981 about time travel and I am trying to find out the title of the book.

The story is about a brother and sister who go to a house that their mother told them to stay away from. The residents of the house are three witches.

The two children ride horses with the three witches and travel on a rope through time. Their method of travel is for two parts of the rope to come together and the horses move across.

Who is the author and what is the title of the book?

That is A Wrinkle in Time by Madeline L'Engle.
She wrote a bunch more but that series also includes A Wind in the Door, and A Swiftly Tilting Planet.

The rope coming together was how the witches described the Tesseract, which is described like a wrinkle in time. The were riding Pegasuses (winged horses) on the cover.

If the old witches were named Mrs Whatsit, Mrs Who and Mrs Which (you can't forget those names), the book is "A Wrinkle in Time" by Madeleine L'Engle.

It's a little like "A Wrinkle in Time" by Madeleine L'Engle, but I'm not sure.
