You will be able to have more children if you treat the PCOS the right way. I left some good links and good info. Unfortunatly, many doctors dont understand PCOS. There is TONS of info out there online but not all of it is accurate. Good luck.

I was diagnosed in Oct. 2004. I have successfully been treating it since (and had 1 pregnancy without using fertility treatment...only treated the PCOS). Here's some good PCOS info and links for you.

I recommend seeing a reproductive endocrinologist. They are generally more knowledgeable about PCOS and the correct treatment. Unfortunately, many doctors are not aware of the proper treatment.

The underlying cause of PCOS is insulin resistance (IR). The best treatment for PCOS is going on an insulin sensitizing drug such as metformin (1500-2550mg per day) combined with a low carb diet and exercise. There are a few important things to know:

1. Many women "pass" the test for IR, but still respond positively from the metformin. No one knows exactlly why..my thought is that the test is not a sure fire way of detecting the IR.

2. You must be on a high enough dose of metformin. I've heard women complain that their bodies dont start working even though they've been on metformin for awhile. Some doctors are hesitant to up the dose past 1500mg...but for some of us it takes more. I don't respond until my dose is around 2000mg a day.

3. It can take a few months on the correct dose, before your body is regulated.

4. It is important to treat your PCOS even if you are not trying to get pregnant. There are higher risks for many things (high blood pressure, blood clots, diabetes, and many other things) when you have PCOS, but if it is treated properly, then those risks are lowered.

When the PCOS is treated properly, all of your symptoms may not disappear, but they should improve some. It will also be a lot easier to lose weight (and keep it off). Our bodies work against us when we try to lose weight on our own, making it nearly impossible to lose weight.

There are TONS of books about PCOS and dieting. There are two that I recommend. Here's the links at amazon for those:

I also recommend a couple web sites:

http://messageboards.ivillage.com/iv-bhp... This one is a great message board where you can ask all your PCOS questions or just chat with the women who are also dealing with PCOS. Good luck.

PCOS is very common. I have it and have successfully been pregnant within a month of diagnosis. It can cause you not to ovulate sometimes, but this is easily remedied with certain drugs, just go to your ob/gyn. By the way, I am only 19. Age doesn't seem to matter with PCOS. The best advice I can give you is to not look it up online, most of the stuff you read on the internet is worst case scenario- no help at all.

I have PCOS, and I know what you're going through. I also know first-hand that you can still get pregnant and have a healthy, happy pregnancy & baby!

First, if you haven't already started, get on Metformin. It's a medication for diabetics, but helps women w/ PCOS better regulate their blood sugars and for some reason, can sometimes help them start ovulating on their own.

Second, make sure you're ovulating. I recommend the OTC ovulation pee-test kits, 'cause even if they're kinda pricey for one test, they work. And if you don't get a result from the ovulation test, you know it's time to go back to your OB.

Third, make an appointment w/ your OB to go over your infertility options. Your OB may start you on a few rounds of Provera to see if that's enough to get you ovulating, then if that alone doesn't work she may prescribe Clomid. When my doc put me on Clomid, she had me come in on the 12 & 14th days of my cycle to give me a transvaginal ultrasound to make sure the Clomid was working. Turns out it did, and now I have adorable, healthy twins (don't freak, the chances of that happening are actually rather low!) :)

My last advice is, don't give up! Plenty of women w/ this condition have gone on to get pregnant and delivery healthy babies! When you finally do get pregnant, BE SURE to take your Metformin as prescribed and eat healthy so you can avoid gestational diabetes, toxemia (I forget what they're calling that nowadays), and also prevent your baby from being born w/ blood sugar problems. Best of luck to you!

PCOS causes sterility. I have it and have been trying to get pregnant for years. It is not hopeless. You need to see an endocrinologist. You will be put on Metaformin, good luck, it causes diarrhea. You can also try fertility meds which also have side effects. Be thankful you have one child.
