I think the question is somewhat valid...I am originally from Europe. The American's "discovered" the fast food chains. This food is not good for you, yet many Americans eat it anyway. MPA, or medroxyprogesterone acetate, is permitted as a growth hormone for animals in the United States and Australia but is banned in the 15-nation EU ( European Union). In humans, it is used in birth control pills and in hormone replacement therapy.

"There are six different kinds of steroid hormones that are currently approved by FDA for use in food production in the US: estradiol, progesterone, testosterone, zeranol, trenbolone acetate, and melengestrol acetate. Estradiol and progesterone are natural female sex hormones; testosterone is the natural male sex hormone; zeranol, trenbolone acetate and melengesterol acetate are synthetic growth promoters (hormone-like chemicals that can make animals grow faster). "

So, there are hormones used in cows that make these meats appear thicker and chickens grow faster. Hormones are also contained in the cows milk.

Although, I don't believe it should be used as an excuse to remain overweight, I do think the production of food has a lot to do with it.

It depends on the person. Just being in the US doesn't make someone fat, but the lifestyle and diet is more prone to let someone get fatter than in most other countries.

It's interesting to note that as american culture has spread around the globe, the obesity problem is also spreading. Here's an interesting talk on that problem that I coincidentally ran into today:

Maybe, but you know what, it is not my problem what anyone puts in their mouth. Nor is it the govenments. I am a trim American because I watch what I eat and try to be healthy. It takes alot of work and willpower sometimes. If someone chooses to down a Big Mac and large fry and wash it down with a side of Twinkie, I'm sorry, I just don't feel responsible for that.

It depends on where they settle in America. If they land in New York City or Los Angeles - no. But man, if they go to the small cities or suburban/rural areas where the people are into eating cows and pies everyday, they may have some weight issues.

People who comes to the US make that choice to get fat as advertising is completly strong for the food industries because you see them on TV,Bulletin boards, signs, newspapers, maps, and tourist guides.Tourist have that choice to walk to the junk or walk away.
In my own personal opinion eating at fast food stores is a waste of money. You have a lot of organic and health stores across the country.People don't find that useful, but I do.I choose to be healthy and live healthy. If people want to die from heart related illness, let them do so.
The old saying goes, you can lead a horse to water but you can not make it drink..

When i was in HS we had an exchange student visit from Germany, We became good friends and she showed me pictures from back home. I barely could recognize her. I asked when the photos were taken, she said just before she came here 7months ago. I was perplexed.

But like most everyone said, it can happen if you let it.
