I have an MS in Counseling and can testify that finding viable employment can be a challenge. I really wanted to be a community college advisement counselor and I consulted a dean of students who told me that counselors were the first professional jobs to be cut for budgetary reasons. He added that when vacancies did appear the competition was so tight that they ended up hiring someone with a Ph.D.

My advice to you is to really research the various specialty areas available to see that there are jobs available. One good specialty area is School Psychologist where you work in the high school environment.

Good Luck.

Have you ever met a highschool guidance counselor...they're a joke!
I'm just saying finding someone with a psychology degree is like trying to find a white kid in Michigan...they're a dime a dozen. Unless you are going to get a phd in psychology I'd do something else. Stay away from computer science as well...everyone has a degree in that and I know from personal experience you'll probably end up making a whopping $22,000 a year. Go with something more practical like being a mechanic, nurse, plumber, electrician, carpenter or doctor(if you don't mind 8 years of school and 5 years internship...the payoff is excellent!) Teachers don't make a whole lot but they're very important. If you want a good all around degree most companies like a nice solid business degree, very generic but very effective. By the way electricians, carpenters, and plumbers make bigger money than you might think...after a few years experience we're talking $60-$80,000 PLUS UNION BENEFITS! Good luck!

You have your answer...there is no demand. A psych degree is good for waitressing. Go with a social work degree instead.
