Not yet. Starting January 1, 2007, you will need a U.S. passport to get back into the U.S. if you travel anywhere outside the country by boat or airplane (including Canada and Mexico). Starting January 1, 2008, you will need a U.S. passport to get back into the U.S. if you travel to Canada or Mexico by passenger vehicle. Until then, a properly notarized birth certificate and a picture ID will do the trick.

No. You do not need a passport anywhere in La Frontera "Mexican free trade zone" which includes all border areas, and MOST, but not all travel routes between border towns. It extends down about 25 miles south of the border in MOST areas.
Check with the Mexican office of "Migraciones" or a local tourism office, if you decide to go outside Tijuana.
You only need a valid piece of identification from, any official government source in the U.S.A., Canada, or some European countries. However since California and some other states have started debates about issuing, official government ids to illegal aliens, it cannot hurt to bring your birth certificate or naturalization papers with you also.
Secondary Note: While you do not need a passport, it is a very good piece of ID, anytime that you leave the country. Just make sure you keep it separate from everything else, in like your sock or bra, in case you get pick-pocketed.

You legally ought to have an American passport to re-enter the U. S.. if you're determining to purchase airplane tickets you'd be requested for it also, until eventually you've a credencial elector (which basically Mexicans have.) if you're flying decrease back to the states you received't get in with out it, if you're utilizing you're waiting to fudge your way in in case you seem very "American". you do not choose your SS card for some thing. and also you received't choose a beginning certificate right here both until eventually you intend to stay right here and then you want a group of alternative issues also. you'll choose an FMM to shuttle everywhere interior the interior of Mexico, you do not choose it to stay close to the border. make confident you get it in Tijuana. Technically you need to shuttle with your FMM and a authorities identity interior Mexico, besides the indisputable fact that it is your passport they favor to work out and in case you do not favor to be paying little fines and be heldup waiting in lengthy lines use it.
