My girlfriend bites her nails down to nothing and then says her hurts. For the past 3 yrs I have tried to et her to stop. I tell her stop when she is doing it, i tried to get her put on fake nails but she bit those off, and she says she will not put the bitter tasting nail polish on her nails. What do I do to get her to stop, she says it is a bad habit she has had all her life, and when she gets nervous she cant help it. What do I do, what do I come up with to make her stop, I even offered to put the bitter stuff on my nails (as I tend to put my nails in my mouth but not bite them). I just dont know any ideas?

I'm not trying to be mean, but this is my opinion.

Well, you're not her father and she's not a little girl. Also, you've been trying for 3 years.

This seems like a minor issue. Is this issue (nail biting) something you're using to mask something else that's a bigger problem with your gf?

What are you going to do if she does NOT stop biting her nails?
It's something you're going to have to live with/put up with.
She'll change when she's ready to change.

I say let her do it and pay no attention about it. It's obvious she's not going to stop after 3 years of trying. You're probably reinforcing it by giving her attention over this issue.

Mix bitter nail polish with her normal ones.
Find images of real damaged fingers, something shocking enough that it would make her stop.
Tell her to clip her nails often, if it's really low it will be harder to bite, and at least she won't tear away bigger pieces.

Or feed her with chewing gum :D that way she'll already have something to chew on.

But honestly if she complains that it hurts but doesn't want to put bitter nail polish on them to stop herself, it seems that she isn't very motivated.

You have to force her to put that bitter stuff on her nails. That will work, and she knows it. She just doesn't want to stop. I would switch out whatever nail polish she does use with the bitter stuff without her knowing about it.

Tell her that nail biting may cause:
-a bacterial infection
-warts around the nail bed
-bleeding
-permanent nail damage

under the nails is a very dirty place. google "nail biting in adults" for more tips.

All I can suggest is FAKE ACRYLIC nails. It is VERY hard to get off and hurts too when you try. That worked for me.
