Most likely, nothing needs to be done. The eye has a lot of blood vessels and once we hit middle age (or stress out) one of them is bound to break from time to time. For most people, the biggest problem is what to tell people when they see a bright red blood spot right on the eyeball. But it should clear up on its own. Just like a bruise anywhere else on the body will clear up.
Having said that, since this has to do with your eyes, you can't be too careful. Tens of Thousands of Americans have diabetes for example and don't know it until something unusual happens to them. Be sure to rule out something more serious! And Get Well Soon!

If it can be seen in the mirror & the white of the eye is a solid red, it is called a sub-conjunctival haemmorrhage. They look a lot worse than they are. Someting as simple as violent coughing or sneezing can cause them. A bloodvessel bursts and the blood spreads on top of the white of the eye, underneath the clear conjunctiva, which lies loosly on top.
try not to rub your eye, to allow the vessel to re-heal. Depending on its size, it can take 6-10 days to resolve. Not eye drops will accelerate this process.
If it keeps re-occurring, it is advisable to check your blood pressure is not too high.

Get it seen by a doc ASAP as there are some subtle things that you might not recognise that can be serious.
The chances are that it is just a burst vessel and will clear up on its own, but you can't differentiate this from something more serious without a doc examining.

awww I've had this happen before!! I looked like I had tomato peel in my eye!!! All you can do is wait it out, I used visine eyedrops on mine after a week and it started brightening up quicker but I'm still not sure if it really helped the healing process.

It has to clear up on its own. You can go to the doctor and they might prescribe some prescription eye drops but they're really just a waste of money- they won't help it heal any faster.

I'm a nurse. You need to see the doctor right away. You could develop an infection in the eye and later lose it. You need an eye exam to check your vision, that's important. Please follow my advice and be seen. I worried about you losing your vision.

It may look scary but don't mess with it. It will go back to normal in a few days.

There isn't much you can really do, Warm compresses with a wash cloth may help if it is irratating and maybe flushing it with saline solution.
