I am breastfeeding and want to re-touch my back tat soo bad! I won't until I'm done breastfeeding though, just for the small chance of Hep that is possible...It's such a small chance, but I don't take chances with my baby.

The ink itself though is mostly safe. The inks are approved by the FDA. But, studies prove high levels of lead in some of the inks, as well as the presence of lithium. And the blue inks had so much copper in them they went right off the scale.

I belive tattooing is a safe hobby, but for you, not your baby.

Good Luck

It is probably safe, but why not wait?

"Tattoos

There is no evidence that getting a tattoo will affect breastfeeding. There should be no harm to mom or baby from the dyes injected. If you get a tattoo, the biggest concern for anyone (not just nursing moms) is infection (hepatitis or HIV)-- so make sure the place you go has good references and is clean. "

"t is very important to screen the tattooist and the shop carefully, checking with the local health department for local laws and regulations. Professional tattooists will follow universal precautions such as sterilization of the tattoo machine using an autoclave, single-use inks, ink cups, gloves and needles, bagging of equipment to avoid cross contamination, and thorough hand washing with disinfectant soap. Most tattooists will not knowingly tattoo a pregnant or breastfeeding mother. It is suggested that mothers wait at least until the child's first birthday to give their bodies a chance to recover completely from childbirth before getting a tattoo."

I was thining about doing one, then opted for just a piercing since I didn't have time between feedings for a tattoo. I asked both the artist and the piercer who said that obviously the majority of places in the states are fine.....not too much worry about contracting diseases cause of disposable material. However, if the tattoo or piercing became infected due to not healing properly or whatever (not like hepatitis c or HIV) that could be passed through the milk and onto baby. This probably doesn't happen often, but the people losing money told me this so I listened!!

Okay--The ink is not a problem it is FDA approved for cosmetic use (although not approved for injecting under skin--but anywho . . . ) The ink molecules are too large to pass into breast milk, not an issue.

The risk of ocntracting a disease such as hepatitis, tetanus and HIV is small if, as previously stated, you go to someone who knows what they are doing.

The REAL risk to you and your baby had not even been brought up by PP. INFECTION!!

Infections are the most prevalent risks of tattooing. This infection can cause problems for you and your baby.

You have to decide what is more important to you, continuing breastfeeding or getting a tattoo now. I would not advise doing both.

mystic_eye_cda already posted the relavent info. Only you can make the choice of wether you think it's safe enough. For myself, I think it's pretty silly to say "wait until you're done" because I personally am not going to be "done" breastfeeding for years (my first is 20 mo and bf and I am 31 wks pg with my 2nd; I hope to nurse all my children until they are at lest 2.5 years old). So if I were to get a tatoo in the next 3 years it would be while breastfeeding.

How old is your baby? I think I personally would probably wait until my baby was at least 12 mo before getting a tatoo, but I would have to research it more. Like I said, only you can make this decision for yourself.

Personally, I would wait. I would feel terrible if my decision to add some color to my tatoo caused my breastfeeding relationship with my child to end prematurely. There are potential risks to tatooing while breastfeeding. They are fairly small so it likely that you and your baby would be fine, but for me personally I wouldn't risk it. The article linked below from the La Leche League gives more specifics on the risks. It is well written and informative.

I'm also breastfeeding and want to get my tattoo fixed/recolored and my OBGYN said that I can do it...it will not do anything to my milk or the baby. Just make sure you go to a reputable place that uses brand new stuff, yadda yadda all that stuff.

Considering you could contract Hepatitis C, I would wait to have it done until you are not breastfeeding anymore.

I'd wait until you are done. If there are any toxins or bacteria in the ink it is better to just risk yourself--not the health of your baby as well.
