How can a team be favored by 81/2 points for example? How do you score a 1/2 point?

Odds are made so that the same number of people bet on each team. This means the bookies are guaranteed to get money. If everyone bets on one team and they beat the spread, the bookies loose a lot of money. So they want to make sure this doesn't happen. Also, if the team gets exactly the point spread, the bookie doesn't make any money off either bet. So the 1/2 point spread grantees that a team won't get exactly the point spread.

that way there is no ties
if a team is favored by 8 1/2...they either win by 8 or less or they win by 9 or more...if they were favored by 8 and won by 8, who'd win the bet?
