There is several possible reasons, with out knowing a bit more information, but this one is the Most likely solution.
AVI format is very different format to MPG. MPG and it's derivative DVD are encoded in the same way. And therefore MPG decoders are basicly do the same job.
To simply describe: AVI files can be encoded different ways, for example DivX and Indeo Video are both formats that are usually seen with the extention .AVI . It should be pointed out that sound can also use different encodings, raw, PCM or MP3. You can even Mix and Match!
What happens when you don't have a Decoder for the file you're playing? It will not play.
I personally found that Most Videos are shown after installing the Combined Community Codec Pack (aka CCCP) @ http://www.cccp-project.net/

It will if you have the correct codec installed. You have to see how the video was encoded. I have a lot of Divx and Xvid video files that have the .avi extention on the end of the file name and I have no problem playing them in WMP.
VLC media player is another option. I find that it works with most types of video's I watch on my computer.

I assume you are refering to Windows Media Player, so if this is the case - do the following:
Click on: Tools>Options
Click on: file Types Tab
Ensure that the Windows Video File (avi) checkbox is 'checked'.
Click apply and then click Ok.
Play your movie

It can play avi, only if you get the codecs for it. Type it on Yahoo and you can download them.
But origionally, Apple/Macintosh made their own format called avi. So you would need to get Apple Quicktime Player to watch AVI videos, if you don't want to get a codec.

it still can, but your settings are probably messed up. do this to check...
Tool>Options>Click FileTypes Tab
Look to see what have check marks next to the file type. If you make any changes, click apply and OK. Might have to reload WMP to see changes.
