ok, drawbacks,
1) happy slapping is becoming more and more popular. if you dont know, although it has been in alot of the papers recently it is when people, usually a group, will either slap or beat a random stranger (usually a stranger who is alone because most of the people who do this are sad & pathetic) to record it on their mobile phone. i know of two people that have died recently from these attacks.
2) the cost of living is ridiculously high, and wages do not compensate for this.
3) it is a good target for terrorism.
4) pubic transport is not great, the prices keep going up but the service in no way reflects these rises in cost.
5) everywhere is overcrowded housing, transport, pubic services, traffic.
6) the congestion charge has just gone up to £8 a day and will rise again soon, and the congestion zone is being widened.
7) there is not many places you can go and feel like you have a bit of space to yourself. even if you share to rent a house the yard will be overlooked by your neighbours.
but i think worst of all is that people pretend to be something their not because they want to be cool. at clubs pubs movies theatres shows etc alot of people you meet are quite shallow self absorbed ignorant selfish and judgemental.
however the theatres museams galleries etc themselves are just wonderful and you can meet interesting genuine people, they are just few and far between.
also if you are under 25 you can buy a "young persons railcard", cost:£20 for 12 months and make quite good savings on travel. eg a £6.30 zones 1-6, 1 day travelcard costs me £4.80 with the railcard.
i'm still here, for me its worth it but i am australian and i've only lived here in south london for 3 years and i am happy in the knowledge i will never settle here. the cost of living and the overcrowding being the two biggest factors driving me home to auz. to settle and raise kids i would not recommend london but for a few years, as long as you can cope with the high cost of living i think you could have a wicked experience, meet great people and be all the better for it, just dont fall for the hype of being cool.

It's a place where there is always something to do and where there are countless ways of enjoying life without being rich. Housing is expensive and so is public transport, but once you've sorted those things out you will find everything else reasonable. You will probably have to commute to work, which is a dehumanising endurance test and will take some getting used to. If you come from the sort of place where you are used to greeting strangers in the street, you will have to get used to being rather more restrained (that, or make a lot of new friends in unexpected places!) There are all sorts of organisations you can join, depending on your own special interests and you need never be bored. But you might start wondering where all the Londoners have got to!

All the best for the rest of your course and I hope things work out for you!

It does depend what you're used to and how much money you'll have! It's a big city with lots going on, but as a result it takes a long time to get to places and is generally an expensive place to live. I lived there after graduating, but have now moved away and prefer going just to visit. I'm still glad I had the opportunity to live there though.

London is a great city.

I recommend somewhere with good transport links not on the tube - they tend to be a better areas, but hard to find and can be more expensive. Try East Dulwich.

As for what to do - so much! I suggest ticking off the obvious tourist things using a site like the tourist board http://www.enjoyengland.com/where/destinations/london/dg.aspx

Get an Oyster card to save money on public transport - http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tfl/fares-tickets/oyster/general.asp

Like all large cities there are good things and bad things.

The murder rate is not as bad as Washington and it's not as cold as Moscow. It's colder than Cairo, and nowhere near as smoggy as Ankara.

The wealth of museums, art galleries and other places of culture will keep you amused at low cost for a long long time.

Come over and take it all in. You might even develop a taste for beer at room temperature, (it's not warm just not freezing cold).

It depends how rich you are! London is very expensive to live in. Also, it is not a very friendly city if you don't know anyone there already. However, jobs are very abundant, much more than other cities in the UK.

I love London. Public transport is good compared to other cities. Nightlife is great and jobs aren't very hard to come by. The lifestyle suits me fine.
