My guess is Barney was a temp. He was often out of a job at the start of the series. According to fan sites Barney's job was never mentioned although he was frequently unemployed and was hinted at working at a rival quarry before getting a job at Fred's quarry. The show had no real continuity as Mr. Slate's first name changed several times as did Wilma's maiden name.

In the early years of the show, Barney's job was not usually mentioned and there are references to several different jobs (e.g. TV repossessor, geological engineer, short order cook). In the later years he worked with Fred at the quarry although what he did was not clear. In one episode, Mr. Slate made him Fred's boss.

To the best of my Flinstone knowledge,Barney was know on the show to have a job but the show never gave us a name of his employment. However on 1 episode he did get a job with Fred after being layed-off.Cartoon focused mainly on Fred.

I believe that they both worked at Mr. Slate's Quarry. Though there were times when Barnery was without work and the Flintstone family helped out where they could, if my memory serves me correctly.
