Brazil, the most powerful country in South America, has a leftist government. Venezuela, the largest producer of oil in South America, elected Hugo Chavez, a fiery leftist as its President. Argentina, another important country in South America, also elected a leftist government

Brazil also has the richest resources, including huge deposits of various metal ores, which have yet to be exploited simply because Brazil has not got the funding. Since most of the Amazon jungle is contained within its borders, it therefore wields power on the political front as well (the Amazon jungle is one of the major places on the globe where carbon dioxide is absorbed from the atmosphere). Therefore, if Brazil threatened to cut down what is left of it, it could wreak havoc on a global scale, especially with the environmental hysteria that is around today.

Brazil is the largest economy and so has the most military potential,
though it may have little influence on the others due to the language barrier,
so Argentina and Columbia are contenders too.
Bolivia and Venezuela are undoubtebly influencing the current turn & debate in politics,
but overall,
the most influencial country on S America is still the US
(followed by various Far East & European nations and companies more so than each other).

It would depend on your definition of power? Military? Politically? Economically?
To "Secret": please, never go to Costa Rica... they do not need pedophiles. Costa Rica has good social security standards, a better gini coefficient, and a good biodiversity, and no military forces at all. Not necessarily the most powerful country in South America, but good enough to live there.
