I've heard that you can go through a leadership training (not a masters degree) and take a test and become eligable to be a principal. Is this true?

I think that is true but most have masters degrees in administration. You would probably do better with a masters.

You have to have your masters to become a principal unless you have a LOT of other work experience and can pass some tests. But even then, you probably need your masters in your other field. Usually people major in educational leadership in order to become a principal.
Even though it COULD be acceptable to have other work experience, I haven't heard of any schools that have EVER hired someone without the masters. I'm guessing that it wouldn't ever happen unless out of desperation when no other applicants are available.
Hope this helps.
