I would say it depends on the area you live in.... Where I live theres only couple dollar difference between the two. If you are looking into a career in one of them you should really sit down and look both trades over very well.

One thing to think about is, as a plumber sometime along the line you'll be dealing with someones stinky crap, when its stuck in their drain pipe, is your gut going to be able to handle that?

Electricians have it fairly easy, they run small wires through big holes, but sometimes they get to spend a whole day fishing a wire through a bunch of stuff, which can be stressful I guess.

Me I'm a HVAC guy, I have to run big stuff through small holes.

Hourly electricians make more but there is more of a demand for plumbers.
But alot of plumbers make more a year because they work more hours.

Why do you ask this question? Are you thinking of a career in one of these fields? I am a master plumber in Texas. I have been "plumbing" for 30 years. This profession has put 3 kids through school, put food on our table, and clothes on our back. I have a little money put away for a rainy day, but I am still out there every day. I enjoy my profession! I like helping others, and I try and educate people about plumbing issues. I attended a 5 year apprentice program, to attain my journeyman license, but I also have yearly continuing education, in order to renew my license every year. I pay for the schooling, and I pay for my license, and I pay high prices for insurance, and I pay inflated prices for the pipes and fittings to install new fixtures, for people. Plumbers have the thankless job of protecting the health of the nation. We are there at 3am when your pipes rupture, and you don't know what to do! We are there when you smell gas, and you call the gas company, who comes out and says" Yes you have a gas leak" and then pull your gas meter and tell you to call a plumber. We are there when you have no hot water, because your water heater flooded your house. We are there when your sewer backs up into your house, and you can't flush your toilet. Most people complain about how much a service plumber charges, especially if it only takes a few minutes to fix a problem. You are paying for what I know, not what I do. Would you rather have someone come into your house, and spend 3 or 4 hours, trying to learn about plumbing, at your expense, or have someone to come in, ask several pertinent questions, and fix your problem in 30 minutes? Plumbing is often a dirty, nasty job, and most people turn their noses up at the thought of having to deal with a backed up sewer. Aren't you glad for those few people who cared enough to go to school for so long, just to learn about that which every person sooner or later will have to deal with, in one way or another. So my question for you is: Who "should" make more: electricians or plumbers?

No, electricians are paid less. They pay plumbers more because plumbers are dumber and it's hard for them to do.

electricians make more per hour than plumbers

electricians make more. they don't get as dirty either.

but plumbing's easier to learn. and it's easier to go into business for yourself as a plumber. there's a lot more residential work repairing people's drains and pipes to get you started than electrical which is more commercial installs and then you're bidding on bigger jobs against established operators.

What someone does received't continuously mirror on his intelligence. some human beings get excitement from operating with their fingers even in spite of the undeniable fact that they'd have the intelligence of a genius. each and every field has those who excel in it and develop into masters of the craft or commerce. they'd flow on to write down books about it, coach it, or layout new equipment and how you may make issues less demanding. you won't be able to generalize and assume someone is a lot less smart or experienced because he chosen one commerce over yet another.

Licensed electricians have to take a test, on the test is three hours of math. You need to know math. You can't be stupid or you die. Thus, they make more money.

In general yes. The situation changes however if there is a union involved or there is a joint plumbing/electrical company, than the pay might equal to one another or even reverse. The best way to find out is at www.hotjobs.com or www.monster.com and look for salary center.
