What are the biggest mistakes first-time mineral makeup users make?

I just can't seem to get mineral makeup to look right on me. It looks dry, powdery, cakey... not natural. Any tips? (I do use moisturizer and allow it to absorb first.)

Use it in very small amounts, if in doubt about what a small amont is, start with an amount equivalant to a pinch of salt or two.If you find you need more coverage, layer it on in small amounts. Also make sure you are blending properly. If it is blended properly, you shouldn't really see any powder residue on your face at all. Also when preconcealing, dab it on, do not rub. And give it time to settle on your skin before you decide it doesn't look good as it can take up to a half an hour for it to set

Not tapping the brush was my issue. And not working the product in....just slapping it on top on my skin. Swirl, Tap, and Buff.....can't miss a step.

And like everyone else pointed out....using way too much. If you used 'normal' cosmetics for years the pigment was so weak, you get used to using more just to get the color out of the product. Just remind yourself this is pure pigment. Less is more. Good natural fiber dry brushes, like some one said several, made just for minerals.

It is a big switch from traditional cosmetics, best thing to do is practice. I switched in May, there were times I looked like an 8 year old that got into mom's make up! I just washed my face and started over....it looked so bad. When I first switched, if I was pressed for time, I did resort to using my old products. Don't give up.......when you get your system down, it does look a lot better. I have since tossed all my old stuff.

If you think it looks dry, try one of those glow powders. Applied after you are done with your face. It does add a glow without looking like an 80's disco queen (unless of course you don't tap the brush.)

First you need to make sure that your face is dry. If you skin is even just a little bit moist there is no way you can blend and buff the mineral foundation onto your skin. Make sure that you only use a little at a time since a little goes a long way. I promise that if you use a little bit with your face dry and you buff and blend your skin will look awesone and natural. Also make sure you tap or blow your makeup brush before you start applying. First of all you need a makeup brush to apply the mineral makeup. When you get the brush make sure it is one of those big brushes. Lightly dip the brush into the makeup and go all around your face before getting more. Trust me it works. Best of luck

Might be the brand. A lot of "mineral powder" foundations are mostly made of fillers which leave your skin chalky looking. Check the ingredients.
I use Arbonne's mineral powder foundation, and my face looks fresh and natural. It's about $34 for a pretty big container of it, and it comes with a free Kabuki brush. they have like 15 shades.
Watch out for the really cheap ones...like Avon..that has 22 ingredients...mostly fillers.
Arbonne's has 7 ingredients. More pure...lasts longer...overall better value...

When I started wearing Bare Minerals I was using too much, and I wasn't buffing enough. You might be using too much. With the mineral makeup it shouldn't look like you have foundation on. Try using less and buffing it more.

You are probably applying to much. When you dip the brush into the makeup you need to tap it on the lid to remove the excess and you are suppose to buff it on in a circular motion.

I keep diffrent brushes for diffrent things like one for just the general all over I have another brush for the warmth use very little at a time and let it settle before you apply more
