Venus is NOT VISIBLE until new year!

When Venus does become visible it will be low in the southWEST for just an short while after sunset.

The brightest star in the southern winter sky is SIRIUS.

You can confirm it's Sirius by finding Orion's Belt and following the line those 3 stars make down and to the left... which points close to Sirius (alpha canis major).

If it's very bright (the brightest, other than the sun and moon), it is probably Sirius, which is due south. When Sirius is very low it often twinkles in vivid, flashing colors, an effect that binoculars reveal especially clearly. If it is Venus, a small telescope will reveal a crescent shape. It's in the southwest horizon just after sunset.

Most likely it is not a star but the planet Venus.

The second brightest blue star would be Sirius (the "Dog Star") located in the constellation Canis Major.

The third brightest blue star would be Rigel, only 6 light years away. It is in the constellation Orion (his right foot).

VENUS! You are looking at the Planet Venus which is mistaken for a star. It also has a bright blueish color to it.

PS: All stars are bright but only Venus (mistaken often for a star) is the brightest..

Its Venus. Its at one of its nearest points this month. Its in the south and the sun (which is in the north at the moment) is shining full on making it look very bright from your point of view.
