The story is about a boy that grows up with a tree and starts cutting and cutting till there is only a stump, then the stump tells the little boy I've got nothing to offer but a place to sit. There are other details, but I have forgotten them. What is the meaning I'm suppose to get from this? Some philosophy story?

The story is Shel Silverstein's the Giving Tree. You are supposed to get the act of selflessness as being noble, even if you are whittled down to practically nothing. I'm not so sure it's a good moral for a person, but a tree-sure.
