I've practically grown up with PCs.

Macs are more stable because MacOS is unix-based. I've never had stability problems on a unix-based OS, but encounter them everyday on a NT/Windows OS.

If he's into video editing, this reinforces why you should get a Mac. The professionals use Macs. Although PCs do have software for video editing, Mac and the software made for it is much more suitable.

Digital photography doesn't require too much, PC can handle this okay. I haven't dealt with it on a Mac, but it would probably be more efficient at this too. Vista isn't out yet, but is finally catching up to the way MacOS handles photos.

Hope that helps.

I'm really sorry, my facts are all based on my knowledge of PCs. Here is the answer. You need to know your childs skill with PCs. If he's very good with them, as in he spends much time on the computer and enjoys being on it, then get the PC and shell out the couple hundred dollars for movie editing software, Adobe makes some very good products. If not then the Mac is definately the way to go. Its easy to use, and has a lot of software for it to do editing.

If possible, he should buy all the parts and build his own system!

The computer can be formatted so that it suits ANY purpose! Meaning, performance capability! Software exists for Both the PC and MAC to make selection strictly a personality issue, not the capability of either brand.

If you buy a MAC, get the one that offers DUAL boot into MAC or Windows.

For a PC, Intel Dual Core, 64Bit CPU, 7900 series graphics card, 2GB RAM, one 36GB or greater SATA hard drive for the Operating System and two or more SATA drives to configure as RAID. The only issue will be the software, not the performance capability of the computer!

Because of the application he is using (photgraphy and video editing), I would recommend the MAC... Adobe has developped excellent software for MACs for the longest time to do these exact functions....
