Our vet spayed our lab at 4 months - way before her first cycle. She was fine. However, she now suffers from slight incontinence and has to take medicine daily for it. Don't know if it's a coincidence or if perhaps it could have caused it. Anyway, I don't think 6 months is too early. Ask your vet for their opinion. Good luck.

lol, not in the right category, but I'll try my best. The older vets usually will prefer her to have atleast 1 cycle, to make sure everything is ok. But, look at it this way, if you adopt a animal from a shelter, they spay/nueter before you adopt them to avoid mating. If I was you, I would get her done before her cycle, she's a big dog, what a mess! I have a chihuahua and she drove me crazy, I can't imagine a big dog! lol
Good luck!

I too have a black lab and she did NOT cycle before we had her fixed. She was about 4 months old which is when our Vet recommended we have it done.

right this is a pair of links of black Labby looking dogs with longer hair. i'm assuming that your dogs has long immediately hair. See if any of those verify out the ingredient to your dogs. A flat coat retriever is a robust guess in all possibility. The Newfoundland isn't as lab looking by using fact the flat coat, yet there's a link to view this one too. The Belgian Sheepdog has greater of a German Shepherd looking face. Hopes this permits you to p.c. out what your dogs has in him.

I think most people in the pregnancy and parenting section know more about human pregnancy and parenting than dogs. I'm not trying to be rude, just trying to help you out to get more, better answers. Why don't you try reposting this question in the pets section? Do you have a vet? You could always ask them what the procedure normally is.

That saying about letting an animal (whether it's a cat or dog) go through one heat cycle before spaying them is an old wives tale. Get her spayed as soon as she's old enough. (Not sure about dogs, but I know for cats it's 12 weeks.)

Some people believe that if you spay them too soon they will not acheive their full size, however that is probably unimportant in a housepet.
Personally I would have it done around 6 months.

Call your vet and ask for sure, but do it as soon as she is old enough. I believe that will be quite soon.
