The New Testament, specifically Matthew, states that Joseph and Mary were traveling to the town of Josephs birth because of the Roman Census.
That Roman Census?
February and March of either 4 A.D. or 6 A.D.
Emperor Augustus of Rome ordered it done and it was completed within a few months of that decree. His decree came in February.
So even the year is 'off'...

Joseph and Mary were traveling during the time of the Roman taxation census, which was held in February or March in the year 4BC. Also, there were shepherds in the field at the time of his birth and sheep were not generally herded until the warmer months of springtime. It has further been theorized that Jesus was born under the Greco-Roman astrological sign of the fish - Pisces, which is February 19 - March 20th in modern time. Greco-Roman astronomical events and its indirectly related "astro-logic" often played an enormous part in determining the chronology of events throughout the Roman Empire. For example, the astronomical conjunction of Venus and Jupiter at or around 8BC astrologically heralded the beginning of the Piscean Age, and it foretold the birth of a new spiritual leader. Even the name of Jesus is a Greek translation: "Jesus" is the Greek diminutive for the name Yeshua or Joshua.
Christmas as we know it on December 25th is actually the date of the Roman festival of Saturnalia, and it became a day of celebration for Christians in the days of early Christianity because it was the one day out of the year when persecutions against them were suspended throughout the Roman Empire.

No one knows for sure. It was probably in May or June, but it is traditionally celebrated on December 25. The Jewish calendar isn't the same as the Gregorian calendar that we use. In the Bible, it says that the angel came to Mary in the sixth month. That would be August or September so he would have been born in May or June.

March 10, 4 BC. Astronomers have located an appropriate conjunction then between Saturn and Jupiter then.
Coincidentally, He shares my wife's birthday!
