On Sunday, I was doing some maintanance on my XP computer. I removed the case on the CPU to use an air duster and vacuum to clean up some of the dust on my fans and cables. When I put everything back together and turned on the machine, it initially would not boot. I removed the cover and made sure every thing was still connected properly and the fan and processor were a little loose. After securing that, I was able to start my computer, though I was asked if I wanted to start in safe mode. After it started again, the new hardware wizard found all of my peripherals. It worked normally after that for the rest of the day.

Yesterday, however, it would not start up at all. I have power to the HD, fans, etc., and there are lights lit up on the motherboard indicating to me that everthing is getting power, but I get nothing. My monitor remains black. I've tested the video card & monitor, both working perfectly. Thoughts?????

I wanna try and solve your problem. It'll be difficult without hands-on though. First off on a scale of 1 to 10 what would you rate your knowledge on PC internal components and basic operation of the components.

Secondly are there any beeps when you power up your PC?

Hi. Either something is still loose or you may have had a static discharge. (Vacuuming a PC is usually not a good idea. It's better to blow the dust off. Less chance of static.) Double check the power and data lines to your HD, both at the motherboard and at the drive. Good luck! Oh, also try to boot from one of your optical drives with the installation CD. If you have access to another PC you could try downloading "Bart PC", : http://www.nu2.nu/bootcd/ a bootable OS on a single CD-R. This can be used to explore the rest of your machine.

Try disconnecting power & connections to all drives & temporarily remove all cards except the video card. You will obviously need the power connections to your system board. Re-seat the processor again as well as the memory, but only use the minimal amt of memory that your system will support.

Then you can try to boot and see if the system will go through POST...

If you still get no video, I would try the video card in another slot.

If still no video, the system board is probably bad.

If you get video at any time, start re-connecting your drives and peripherals...

Check your memory modules...not seated correctly will cause no video. Does you monitor led flash green then go amber? Do you have onboard video as well?...if so remove the add on card and try it. Will it boot in safe mode?

Re-Check the connections on all the system components. Is your computer beeping at you at all? If so, find out what the beep code translates to by reading your manual.

If it is not beeping at you, you may have inadvertently damaged your hardware. You may have accidentally shocked some of the computer components. Electrostatic Discharge is one of the primary killers of computer hardware, especially when the humidity is low.
