On the internet, I've come across freeware that fixes registry errors which supposedly slow your computer down. How do I know if I have this problem? I'm scared to download any programs from unknown sites. If registry repair programs are needed and offered for free, why doesn't microsoft offer them on their site? Also, are "internet washers" safe to download and use?

Microsoft does offer a registry cleaner that I use weekly. It not only removes spyware, it safely cleans the registry of junk that gets in there from downloads, from spyware, from just being on the internet.

The registry cleaner sites I've seen will run a scan and then tell you the computer has hundreds (or thousands) of errors and the only way to fix them is to buy their product. There are no "freeware" sites.

Microsoft's IS free, safe and fast. Nothing stays in your computer, temporary files downloaded to do this are removed as soon as the cleanup scan is completed.

Internet washers are the same thing. You can do everything they can do, if you are willing to put forth a little effort. Clean out your internet history, files and cookies by clicking on Tools, Internet Options and deleting all this. Set your internet history for 1 or 2 days, not the 20-day default. there is no need to keep a 20-day history of everything you looked at on the internet.

the windows registry is a list of instructions that tell the operating system how to relate to certain programs. it is advised to not mess with your registry unless you know what you're doing.

i would be very careful about downloading any program from any site that says it'll "fix" your registry. same thing with any freeware that you may find on the internet that is supposed to clean up your computer. if you want some kind of software to do this, talk to a repair shop and get some ideas as to what programs are safe.

Most freeware on the internet, such as those purporting to clean your computer from spyware, clean your registry, speed up your computer, or such things, are really devils in disguise. They claim to help your computer, but do the exact opposite. Everyone would love to have a program that magically cleans up the computer and makes it super fast, and they all nicely fall for the trap.

Honestly, the best way to clean the registry I find is to just reinstall the entire system. I have backup systems in place so I can go from scratch to a working system in a couple of hours unattended.

I would apply the same idea for internet washers. Get yourself Firefox (http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/ ) for a web browser and use the privacy features on that to clean up usage tracks. Also, get Spybot (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html ) to help clean up spyware and other problems with your computer. Stay away from everything else.
