how long do you have off at christmas, do you agree with me that shops are greedy to gain every extra penny they can instead of letting hard working citizens spend precious time with their families?

GOD yes they r greedy! Christmas has gotten so commercial and hardly anyone even thinks of the real reason we have Christmas! Its crazy! People go into debt all year for just one day out of the year. Its gimme gimme want want! I dont blame the stores totally- its society that allows them to do it too! Its us wanting more more and more that keeps them goin! Ya know? My family always makes each other home made coupons every year and we all love getting them! We all decorate the tree together and we still string popcorn and fruit loops fopr the tree. Sure I over spend like everyone else but I do try to keep a few little traditions in there that give us time as a family!

When you consider that Black Friday (the friday after thanksgiving) is called that because that is the day that retailers finally start making money (and go into the black our of the red) you realize that retailers have only 6 weeks in a year in which to make a profit - and if they don't turn a profit they will have layoffs. You might also consider the fact that many stores hire college students on their vacation to work for those weeks - and those college students have only this time to work and need to make as much money as they can, to cover expenses until Spring Break.

All in all the last 6 weeks of the year are probably the most important weeks in the entire economic system. I don't think it is greed, I think it is making hay while the sun shines, if you know what I am saying.

Peace!

PS - the more telling thing is that they are actually advertising prices on jewelry on TV and selling stuff at 60% off already in many retailers, which to me seems unheard of. That says to me that the retailers are hurting, big time. I mean, I can see 60% off 1 day before Christmas, but the last week, when I'd say at least 40% (if not 70%) of people do their shopping? They just can not compete with online shopping it seems to me - unless this economy has a low retail turn out in general and they are hoping to just unload their stock for a much smaller profit.

No, stores are greedy year-round:)

Seriously, I agree that most people should have at least a week around christmas off, but I can see why the store doesn't want to be under-staffed at the single busiest time of year. Maybe a good solution would be to let people voounteer to work near the holidays, a lot of people would appreciate the extra cash

I did work in retail for many years and yes they are greedy. The last place I worked in let us have three days off at either Christmas or new year. They even opened on boxing day!! I worked the first year that they opened on Boxing day and was bored silly. We did have customers, but what I wanted to know was why on earth did they still want to shop as that is all they have been doing for the last three months. I am sick to death of shopping.

May-be it's 'us' that are to blame! We consumers are the ones that make stores open during anti-social hours! I'm not saying it's right or wrong ....... just pointing out the fact that if the consumer didn't WANT shops open for longer and closer to Xmas, there wouldn't be the market or profit in such opening hours and so the shops would close!

The other side is that in opening longer, it does give people the opportunity to earn money over the spending rich Xmas period.

Again, its the consumer that's greedy here and not the shops - they're simply meeting demand for goods and services!

I have Christmas Eve and Christmas Day off, even though where I work is open Christmas Eve.

Stores are "greedy" year round. Christmas is no exception. If you have issues with it, don't shop there and stay home on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day instead of complaining about what other people do that is out of your control.

All businesses need to sell as much of their wares as they can to stay in business and keep people like you in a job. How would you feel if you went back to work after Christmas and the boss says " Sorry I have to let you go because we didn't make enough money to stay afloat. Because we shut down for Christmas to give you time off all our customers went to other shops.

Hell yes. My GF works Christmas Eve until 5, then Boxing Day at 10:30 a.m. She works at a card and novelty shop that is really busy this time of year.

The Christmas season is when most stores make their profit for the year. They are dependent on the holiday season to keep them going. I am not in retail or a Christian.

Kberry I fully agree. They are milking like never before. Bank accounts are already knackered, and they want us to go in debit and sell blood to get more!
I Think they are getting worse and worse every year!
