This is not necessarily a bad thing. Your area will become known as the coffee shop area. People will choose one over the other for small reasons. Personal service helps. Try to use the name of each customer. Maybe offer free wifi internet access. Perhaps home made cookies or muffins would help.
Whatever you do, try to avoid a price war. Both shops willl lose.

Try to make some coupons that you offer to your customers so they will return and use the coupons that you gave them. Check out if any offices or shops around you that need coffee or sandwhiches for lunch or break so you can draw up a deal with them. Good Luck and all the best.

Do your best to beat the competition. I used to hang out at a coffee shop that had shelves with books and boardgames, it had a very cozy and comfortable atmosphere. It was a great place to stay and drink lots of coffee. The owner spent alot of time being friendly and chatting with customers.

well, firstly, how well does your coffee shop do?
sell stuff which is 10 times better at a lower price: the following cakes do best
carrot cake
coffee cake
lemon cake
victoria sponge
sell high quality filled sandwiches instead of just plain boring ones,
you need good seating/lighting and firendly staff then you will be 10 times better
if you have all of the above already....get set GO and compete!

Spend more budget on creative innovation !!
You should :
1. Widen the flavor/taste/type/selection of your coffee (eg : coffee milk, choco coffee, latte, coffee+juice of certain fruit, coffee+honey bee, coffee+tea, etc)
2. Offer something new on the menu (eg : donuts, sweet bread, slices of cakes, fried banana, sandwiches, burgers, sausages, etc)
3. Focus on interior and display for they are to attract customers at the first time (eg : minimalist style with modern urban touch, baroque touch or mediterannea touch)
4. Position your price appropriately (eg : your customers are mainly executives, then arrange your price range suitably, mainly teenagers/youth, set it lower)
5. Last but not least, boost up your personal touch of service. (eg : Try to recognize the frequent customers well as they'll respect you more later and bring in more repetitive customers)

- Treat really well to your customer who comes everyday.
- Promotional coupons-- every 5 th coffiee 6 th is free.
- Check and see what they are offering that you don't offer... slowly.... slowly .... add those to your coffiee shop... when ever you add something to your coffiee shop.. don't forget to advertis.. hanging banners and other stuff. Try to save money if possible... meaning you might run out during advertisement or promotional campaign...
- Remember your compitatior is not just sitting and enjoying coffiee... he or she is try to hunt you down..so any minute get ready..
- Instead of employee... most of the rush hour time... you must at the coffiee shop...

the level of service you provide will make a big difference. smiles, greetings, thank you all mean a lot. people had gotten used to sucky service so take it back to the good ol' days when people were actually served with a smile. keep a clean, warm, inviting space. do you have tables, small airchairs or sofas? you could host open mic nights or poetry reading nights. anything to get folks in the door. and of course, your coffee should be fresh & tasty.

I would get a notebook that fits in my back pocket and write down every customers name and a brief description of them. I would then share this information with all employees. Then I would beat the competition with "world class service". Do not sell on price. Bottom line is "people buy from people they like."

Go over and see what they have that you dont, check the prices etc.. and maybe you can offer your customers discounts or coupons good for each day of the week. I dont know but those are some ideas.
Good luck with your shop :)
