Yes you are correct, I have done this myself ;)
You should be able to put your SIM into a T-Molbile Go Phone.
You see, the mobile phone company will usually LOCK the phone, so that it can only be used on their network.
Fortunately for you, you want to put a T-Mobile SIM into a different T-Mobile phone, and so yes, it should work (won't matter if your SIM is for a contract or just pay as you go).
It will only be a problem if you was with a different phone company, for example Orange or O2. Then you will find that your SIM wont work in this T-Mobile Go-Phone.
I hope this helps - and hope you enjoy your new mobile :)

T-Mobile uses the SIM chip to handle the actual pre-paid operations. All you have to do is call T-Mobile once you have the phone and tell them you want to convert the phone from PrePay to your normal plan. They will tell you to put your normal SIM chip in the prepaid phone, and then will send a special configuration package to the phone that will make it normal. Takes about all of 5 minutes to do.
T-Mobile is really nice and flexible with this stuff. I have literally 16 cellphones (because I write software for them) and have never had a problem using any of them on T-Mobile.

was just at Tmobile and asked almost the same question. you can only use phones that have the T Mobile logo on them. The Go phone is Cingular so you cant. But what he did say is that yes you can use the pre paid phones to a plan service just change the sims card.

He can't. Washington is an inherently corrupt place and so long as there are politicians it always will be. Everyone runs on the pledge to clean up politics. 200 years of the democratic process and the government is still the land of back deals and shady figures. I'm sick of being told that he's the miracle cure for all of this.
