I agree with you. Christmas is not about buying expensive gifts, but the advertising people have made it so. You can still have the old-fashioned celebrations with family and friends, and just ignore the media hype. Children should be taught at an early age, that Christmas is not just about Santa Claus and amassing a pile of presents. There is much more to the holiday than that. You can still form the traditions of going to church, gathering as a family for a nice dinner, caroling in the neighborhood, taking a box of groceries to a needy family, volunteering at a homeless shelter, and going to Christmas pageants where the story of Christmas is told in drama and song.
I can remember one Christmas when I was so poor I couldn't even afford simple gifts for my three-year-old daughter. I didn't want her to not have anything, so I happened to find some gifts she had received the previous year, that she hadn't played with very much, and rewrapped them to give her on Christmas morning. However, I didn't figure on her memory being so sharp. When she opened the first gift, she said, "Mommy -- that's the same thing Santa brought me last year!" Oh, dear -- I really blew that one. But the point is, the gift giving tradition started when the three wise men brought gifts to the baby Jesus. Somehow that evolved through the ages as a massive bonanza for department stores, and progressed technologically to websites. Gift giving has gotten out of hand, like you mentioned, but it probably isn't going to end any time soon. Therefore, everyone should keep in mind that it's the thought that counts, even if the gift is something inexpensive and practical. Some of the best presents I've received are hand-made things. Those show the best thought and feeling, and you won't find them mass produced.
To sum it all up, give from the heart and not from the pocketbook. And never forget the true meaning of Christmas. Re-establish the yuletide of the olden days. God bless you, and have a very Merry Christmas!

The joy and magic of christmas has gone because people are spending far too much more than they ever did and getting into debt.
I think its become too commercialised for a start and theres too much pressure to buy thie seasons 'must haves'.
Personally I think it should change because every year becomes more money more dread and what for? More debt and misery and working extra hard for the next year to pay even higher prices for the same thing.
Soon it will become such a chore that Im afraid in the end people just wont bother because they simply cannot afford to.

I totally agree with you, we never had much when we were kids either but never sulked or threw a hissy fit, my mom worked hard and bought us what she could afford or what she could ill afford really, but at least we were always grateful for whatever it was, last Christmas we bought our eldest great nephew, who is now 7 years old, a large magic set, he opened it, turned to us and said 'is that all I'm getting', he dad sat and laughed thinking it was so funny, how rude and spoilt he has allowed his child to become and how bad mannered and crass he is himself, Christmas isn't about family togetherness and love anymore, its about the latest, most expensive gadget on the block and if the kids don't get them they go into sulks over it, without sounding old and boring, I would do anything for one of them old fashioned lovely Christmas days again, how about you, have a great Christmas.

I agree - people expect so much these days, and actually most people have everything they need and if they want something that is more of a luxury they buy it themselves - the spirit has definitely gone out of the whole thing...

I agree. Those days are long gone unfortunately, and all the toys stop being used like 3 days later anyways.
