Most applications give you the option to answer the question or not. Also, if you are an American citizen, you are simply AMERICAN.
Comment to Black Heaven: Why is it only ok to ask your race when it's benefitting you? It's ok to give out scholarships based on your race, but it's not ok to give out jobs based on race? That makes no sense what so ever.

In the past when immigrants came to this country they did everything they could to become Americans (without the hypen). They also kept their heritage so they could pass it on to future generations. We are all Americans. I am so tired of hyphenated Americans. Yes we are all proud of where our families are from, there is nothing wrong with that. But we all need to remember why we are here. It is not to be an African-American, Irish-American, Hispanic-American etc... but to be AMERICANS!!!!

I believe it is wrong to ask the race of an applicant. It is nobody's business (not even our Government). It may have been necessary in the past to guarantee equal opportunities to certain minorities, but this is no longer necessary in today's society.

I wish they would stop asking those questions on job applications. It could hinder someone from getting a job if they are white, black, or other. On college applications they award scholarships for minorities, but also for other extracurricular things too, which I think is okay.

because companies have to have a certain number of minorities, Give a big thanks to Affirmative Action and EEOC.
Well, what about whites? Not all of us are the same, yet we use the catergory "caucasion".
Also the "african-American" term came about as a poltically correct term to not offend people, it is not meant to be derogatory.

Quota's. Good gracious, you are being anal about the question. You don't have to put anything if it bothers you that much. They should just put black, white, hispanic, oriental/asian- that way it covers it all.
