Its not exactly "not so well known" but the bus trip inland to see Delphi and the Temple of the Oracle is well worth the drive, and they make a couple of stops in some cute out of the way places (a fabulous "truck stop" for coffee/snacks, and then lunch in a ski-resort town - sorry forgot the name, but its adorable!). Also, if you can day trip to Rhodes, wonderful! any of the islands are a joy. and, if you have the chance - ask your travel agent to book a trip to the Turkish ruins of Ephessos (spelling?) a MUST see if you are in that part of the world, a true example of the genius of the ancient Greeks. Bon Voyage!

Santorini- hands down for the views. It's an old volcanis crater that sits above the sea. Some of the most beautiful sunsets I have ever seen and a must if you're looking for something romantic.

Rhodes is great, and like a previous poster said, it's close to Turkey and I second the idea to take a trip to Ephesus near Kusadasi in Turkey. The main port is still surrounded by old stone walls and was once the site of the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Ancient Wonders of the World. One side of the island is on the Aegean Sea and the other side is on the Meditteranean. There are both sandy private beaches (around the Acroplois of Lindos) and rocky ones.

I didn't care for Crete as much as Mykonos or the other islands, I would skip it and Patmos if they were options. Not an island, but a worthwhile trip from Athens is to Napflion.

Have fun!
