If someone has used a name for 18 years and they are only 21
why would they change that name ?

Maybe they want to honor (or seperate themselves from) a step parent or biological parent who for whatever did not share their name originally. People who are in show business or prominent careers often change their names to shorter/less ethnic/"nicer" generic surnames for professional reasons.
