my sony vaio vgc-ra716g quit due to overheating. the fan inside thepower supply box stopped working. i tried a 500w atx2.03 version externally ('cause it did not fit inside) which worked only for a few days and the pc quit again. there was an error which microsoft said is due to device installed.

Most likely the system will not boot properly. If it's close you may find that it boots, but crashes when the video card kicks into a high energy use state (meaning gaming). The big problem is if you decide to run like that and over tax the power supply... Sooner or later it will likely give out and it could take other components with it.

Any decent 400+w psu will handle a load like that. It is sad though when you look inside store bought computers and see what wattage psu's they really do use :(

Is a great psu for the money.
But an error like that "device installed" is usuallt not power supply issue
