What ever happened? There was the threat of the HUGE pandemic; Now where are we at?
Did the US Government really need to buy millions of doses of supposed vaccine for this 'Global Pandemic' or was it all a scam?

In the 1920s there was a flu epidemic that killed more people than WWI and WWII combined. This could happen again.
Avian flus have existed in the past, usually coming from Asia where people live in close proximity to chickens and other birds. If there is bird flu that an also infect humans, it could easily spread around the world through bird migrations.
The current bird flu has spread to many countries (including Europe) and a number of people have died. The flu is transmitted mostly from birds to humans. There were some cases of transmission from humans to humans, but it is rare and not easily transmitted.
The fear was if the flu changed to become easily transmitted between people.
The current avian flu has been dealt with mostly through international efforts to detect and quarantine (kill) birds infected with the flu.
Similar to SARS, the methods of containing these diseases have been very effective and the efforts of the International community should be applauded. SARS only become so widely transmitted because the authorities in China pretended it wasn't happenning for a long while.

Bird flu remains a problem, but it has lost the attention of the media because a slow evolution isn't exciting anymore.
Since the coverage has ceased, it has continued its march around the world. Human cases have spread all across Asia and avian transmission has spread throughout Europe, with non-H5N1 strains reaching America. 57 people have died in Indonesia, out of 74 cases of contact. Deaths have been seen all across the Asian continent.
As more and more humans come into contact with the disease, more and more die. Furtermore, more contact speeds the virus's evolution into a strain that spreads human to human.
The government's fears of a global pandemic are definitely warranted. The Spanish Influenza killed millions, and was, as we now know, a strain of Bird Flu. Proactive research could save millions of lives in the future.

Could be the U.S. government knows something for it to contract for $200 million more worth of vaccines against the H5N1 avian flu virus.
