Cold hard facts. Not speculation.

In an unbiased way. Informative, not judgemental. With empathy if relevant. Openly, honestly and clearly. Vietnam, or the 6'o'clock war was news footage I grew up with. Fascinating series called the 10,000 day war covered the French, Japanese, French again and then American war. Well worth a look if you can find it.

A good documentary tells a story. A good format might be to follow the fortunes of one soldier, one Vietnamese family or one platoon. This would allow you to structure the piece and bring in other relevent details to flesh the thing out.

Its best to add some tension as well, so even if you know that they all die or that they all survive its best to try and leave it as a mystery to the viewer.

be objective and not partial, something that sometimes put you in a dangerous position specially if you ought to tell the true and tthis is about against your nation, some countries have control on the media the politicians use to take care of the media,i will give you an ex: in the usa you use to see more local info. than international because if they show it the most of the time they will see things that the citizens will claim to them and that they are covering by years(and i am not only talking about vietnam).
