About how many points are they off from a professional I.Q test score?

Almost all online tests are designed to make the vast majority of users look smart. Don't trust a score you get from one. You can get somewhat better results by buying a sample IQ test in a bookstore. Even those are unreliable, though. Your actual IQ can really only be determined professionally--and even then, it's just a number, not really how smart you are.

They are usually far off.

First, most people are considered brilliant by those things. people rate 160+ all the time. Most intelligent people are 120-130.

Then of course there's the environment to consider. Taking an actually IQ test puts you in a stressful situation. Online does not. Actual IQ tests are timed. Only a few online are.

Really all the online ones are good for are bragging rights among friends that took the same test, but they're nowhere near accurate.

They're very far off. In fact, most IQ tests that you actually have to think on are very far off. The best way to find out your IQ is to go to a doctor and get an analysis of the brain. This was done a brith for most ppl, so in fact, your parents probably know your IQ!

IQ tests are falling out of favor these days. It is somewhat difficult for any test to score something that is not even clearly defined. Any IQ test is pretty much the same as playing a trivia game. IQ was originally defined as a measure of one's mental age compared to one's chronological age. Given that, an on line IQ test is probably just about as accurate as a paper and pencil one. It is also probably just about as innaccurate.
