i wouldn't let him get too close to the tree--although cedar bedding is popular with small pet owners, the resin (sap) from pine trees is poisonous to them (when the chips are dried out, there is no resin in them). I know cat and dog owners are discouraged from allowing their pets near Christmas trees because when the tree is placed in water, the sap can drain into the water. When the pets drink the water, they can get sick. Although it's not likely that your hamster would lick the tree or drink the water, it's better safe than sorry. Here's the wikipedia article where is says that resin is poisonous:

It is very possible that it could be harmful to your hamster. Some place actually spray paint their Christmas trees so it will stay a bright fluorescent green longer and the paint could be harmful to the little guy. If you purchased yours from a store I would call and see if they added any chemicals to it, namely spray paint.

We constantly have a real tree in my abode, it particularly is custom. properly, we proceed to exist a huge farm finished of evergreens so we shrink down our very own tree and whilst it's time to get rid of it we take it to a close-by pit or you might have somebody come get it and dipose of it for you. P.S. it particularly is properly worth it to have a real Christmas tree, the scent in the process the home is mind-blowing and it purely feels greater like Christmas =]
