i know what the definitions are for both words but how can i explain to someone why they are not synonymous. The definitions are so much alike its hard to expplain.

It's the same difference there is between the words "coming" and "going."

Both words can mean "to carry," but "bring" means "to carry as you come" and "take" means "to carry as you go."

Bring - goes from here to there
Take - goes from there to here
Bringing is having something along with you that you are transporting to somewhere. Taking is not having it with you when you go, but transporting it with you when you leave.

Because they also have opposite meanings.

Bring means to provide, to add something.
Take means to remove, to subtract something.
