where do we use the word 'ex' and where do we use 'former'?

e.g Is it 'ex-president' or 'former president' of xyz? Please advice.

I think the difference is if they r alive or not. I have an ex hubsband now and can not wait for him o be my former husband.

I think they can be used interchangeably.
You can say both "ex-president" as well as "the former president of..."
