New York used to be called New Amsterdam by the Dutch. See wikipedia article and search the page for the word 'law'. Same for article on 'New Netherland', a colony established by the Dutch East India company around Manhattan.

e.g. 'To secure the settlers' property and its surroundings according to Dutch law, the third director, Peter Minuit, created a deed with the Manhattan Indians in 1626 which officially authorized legal possession of Manhattan according to Dutch Laws.'.
