GOOGLE "ENGAGEMENT RINGS". YOU WILL FIND ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW THERE. A LOT OF SITES OFFER SHOPPING THROUGH THE NET ALSO. AS FAR AS I REMEMBER- THEY START FROM AROUND 4-500 DOLLARS AND GO UP TO ...!!!
IT'S NOT THE RING THAT IS IMPORTANT THOUGH, IF SHE LOVES YOU SHE WILL BE HAPPY EVEN TO A PLASTIC TOY ONE.

If by proposal ring, you mean an engagement ring, the amount you should expect to spend is based on your income level. As a general guideline, you should expect to spend approximately 2-3 months' income. That's GROSS income, including wages, tips, investments, etc., not just after-tax income. That may seem like a lot of money, but this is a BIG decision.

One of the MANY reasons to be VERY sure you're doing the right thing is this: if things don't work out, you will probably only get about 25-50% of your money back if you have to try and re-sell. Women don't like "used" engagement jewelry, as a rule, so don't count on being able to "recycle" your diamond for the next lucky lady.

As far as where to shop, there are literally dozens of options. Privately-owned, hometown jewelry stores will probably be on the expensive side, but you'll get the best service. And since their reputation in the community is important, you might actually be able to negotiate and get a better deal.

Larger "chain" jewelry stores might be less expensive, but you'll need to look at their paperwork, and they're less likely to negotiate. And you might wind up paying too much for an inferior product.

Be VERY careful buying engagement jewelry from a pawn shop, or from a private individual (a.k.a. "estate jewelry"). There's the "used" jewelry issue, as well as an increased likelihood of buying a piece of junk.

You can also shop online, but again, be very careful. Buying diamonds on eBay, for example, is a risky proposition. I would only go with an established, reputable dealer (such as Blue Nile).

Do a little research before you go shopping. There are lots of sites out there where you can educate yourself about the "Four C's" (Carat Weight, Cut, Clarity and Color). You'll get more respect from the sales staff, and be a lot less likely to overpay, if you know what you're talking about.

Buying jewelry is somewhat akin to buying a car. Do NOT just walk into the store, plunk down your money, and ask, "How much diamond can I get for this?" The sticker price may be negotiable.

Whatever else you do, and especially if you decide to go the estate jewelry route (antique stores are good places to look), insist on a diamond certificate (also called a "diamond grading report," "diamond dossier," or "diamond quality document") issued by a CERTIFIED gemologist. The two major certifying bodies in the U.S. are: the Gemological Institute of America (the "GIA") and the American Gem Society Laboratories (the "AGSL").

AVOID THE MALL JEWELERS!

They overcharge way too much.

Go to a local independent jeweler. Check your local Better Business Bureau for a list of well respected jewelers and shop around.

Forget the ring. Take the money and go back to school so that you can learn how to spell.
