I have a Vauxhall Astra and it's just started making a rediculous banging noise coming from the front wheels. On the motorway comin home it got sillly loud!

I'm wondering what it could possibly be, any ideas?

Hard to tell from hearsay but i will list a few possibility's . CV joint broken, wheel bearing collapsed , brake calibre bolt fallen out ,Drive shaft balance weight come loose, brake disc shattered and striking the brake calibre, brake pad shed its ferodo pad and jamming, drive shaft locking nut come loose . and the most likely a loose wheel nut

first have a look. theres about a million things under teh bonnet, and a look see is as good a place to start as anything.

so it happens in a straight line, so its not your suspension or steering. it could be as simple as loose wheel nuts..has someone tried to nick them?

wheel bearings collapse, Track rod ends wear, CV joints fall apart, but these faults only really show up when cornering...

are you sure its coming from the front wheels? prehaps the others are right, and its the wife/cat/small child being squished around the pulleys and belts...

This could be caused by a loose wheel, worn wheel bearing, or a bad CV joint. It could be an engine problem, like a power steering pump, alternator, air conditioner, or something like that. The terms that we use in the U.S. may be a little different but you should get started with these areas. Maybe your back wheels are going forward. (just kidding)

I might be that old grannie you hit, stuck under the wheel arch, or whilst you look, check the tires for a mising lump when you hit the kerb last. failing that, I must assume that the half shafts from your front wheel drive are knackered, and you should seek the expensive company of mechanics before you have a serious accident.

Amongst the many possibilities, one is that one or both of your front wheels is loose. Got any enemies who might have loosed the wheel nuts?
Take it to you nearest Vauxhall dealer or other favoured motor mechanic & get them to sort it out if you are not mechanically minded.

I found a free download of Calibre here http://bitly.com/1rmw28X
It's the best choice.
Cheers ;)

I would take the Astra staight to a garage and ask them to check all the front end bushes and whilst they're about it, check the track rod ends.
Good luck.

it could be many things... one you need a oil change real real bad! the front tires ore loose... there could be something loose around there... (not necesseraly a part but like a wrench, screwdriver etc) or maybe half of these people are right.. you hit the lucky charms guy and he wants out... or maybe your car is powered by houndred of gnomes... who knows...

Likely cause will be to do with your suspension. Likely to be a front spring that has broke or could be anti-roll bar bush that has gone weak.
